NEW Apprenticeship programme

RYAN TRIMMER – Machine Operator Apprentice

Ryan Trimmer becomes the first successful candidate to join our new Apprenticeship programme at fc cartons. This will enable us to have sustainable skills throughout our business and industry.

Having discussed our needs with Carl Roberts from Matrix Training and explaining the role we had in mind which was a machine operator apprentice in our die cutting facility, we interviewed potential candidates over a number of weeks.

Ryan joined us after completing a year’s course in engineering at Derby College and has continued his development by working through an NVQ level 2 diploma in manufacturing operations on-site at fc. Carl from Matrix makes regular visits to see how Ryan is getting on with his NVQ and also to monitor his progress within the business and especially within the die cutting and creasing process.

He is proving to be a real success and has been rewarded for his efforts. I am sure that by the end of his apprenticeship, the skills he has learned will benefit both himself and fc in the future.

Ryan says “this is so different to college but more enjoyable working with the team, I know I have lots more to learn but already feel I contribute”.

He is hard working, eager to learn and very enthusiastic, we couldn’t be more pleased! The Apprentice programme is ongoing and we look forward to giving more young people the opportunity to learn new skills across all our capabilities and join our already talented team.

NEW Pick and Place process

fc cartons are proud to announce the launch of our new Pick and Place process.

Following an extensive development programme from August 2016, we’ve now introduced the Esatec Digistar Window Patcher Pick and Place machine (WPPP) to further enhance the finishing capabilities we can offer to our customers – the WPPP is the most complete Digistar machine available to date.

It is a multi-functional automatic window application system which cuts film in line from a roll and also places pre-creased/die cut windows onto finished carton blanks; using a highly bespoke, electric pre-programmed management system.

With unlimited design possibilities, the carton can incorporate any shape as the window is placed on the inside – meaning glue points and bleeds are discretely hidden, ideal for seamless, luxury packaging.

An impressive technical ability allows the machine to cater for a large number of applications and carton styles for both Window Patching and Pick and Place. Whilst performing with utmost accuracy, the Pick and Place machine also has the ability to produce Tri-Fold cartons – an increasingly popular aesthetic device seen more often in up-market or luxury packaging.

Cartons are fed into the machine in a normal fashion, however, the Digistar has the ability to pre-split the carton, insert a full window between and eventually glue it. The result is a four-panel window which effectively showcases the product – presented beautifully in 360-degree angles, unlike most other packaging designs.

Whilst this process is relatively new to fc cartons we have already attracted new customers and expanded an already extensive and versatile service for existing customers who have all been exceptionally pleased with the results. We are proud to share just a couple of the testimonials we have received to date:

“I have been delighted by the efficient and timely service provided by fc cartons for Pick and Place work sent out to them, and more importantly, we achieved the required completion date for the customer. I will not hesitate to use them in the future, especially for Pick and Place processes.”

“We outsourced one of our highest profile product lines to fc cartons during a period of heavy demand and I was very impressed by their ability to produce high quality products having had very little exposure to the design prior to production.”

For fc cartons, Pick and Place adds another important piece of the jigsaw to our capability of offering an exceptional range of finishing solutions. It allows fc cartons to manufacture highly niche and creative designs tailored towards higher end products. Since having the machine, fc cartons have produced a variety of carton styles from perfume to cake boxes. It allows us to offer our customers the opportunity to fully show off their products, increase shelf impact and enhance their overall competitive edge.
